What is Cyber Security?

Cyber Security is a set of certifications that give confidence to Businesses that their IT systems are being secured and that ‘best practises’ are being adhered to for data access, protection and other security considerations on IT systems. It came from the ISO certifications that come Companies need to have to do business; mainly the ISO 14001 and 27001 Certifications.

It was realised that Small-to-Medium Businesses cannot always gain these Certifications as they are involved and costly. However, some IT auditing and security should be done across every Business. And so Cyber Security was created.

Cybersecurity breaches threaten 50% of UK businesses annually. Phishing leads the way, hitting 84%, while ransomware costs small and medium businesses an average of £6,940 per attack. Strengthen your defences now!

Understanding the Different Levels of Cybersecurity Certification

CE and CE+ Certification means that both the Business and their own clients have peace of mind that IT systems are secured and up to date on a regular basis. As well as a Certificate you get Logos which you can place on your Website, Emails and other correspondence to show you are Certified.

Cyber Essentials (CE)

This is a self-certification method, based on a set of questions from the IASME body. They are answered by the Business (usually in conjunction with their IT support provider) and then are marked by an external Cyber Security assessor to gain a pass and a Certificate. CE is done on an Annual basis, with the questionnaire answered and updated as the businesses IT changes.

Cyber Essential Plus (CE+)

This is the next level of Certification; and is a more thorough audit of the Business Network and devices, looking for vulnerabilities and checking items such as Routers (open ports, etc.). Again, this is an Annual Certification. CE+ is used quite a lot in Financial Businesses. To gain CE+ you need to be CE Certified first.
