Detecting Scams: Expert Guidance for Email and Call Security
Educating users on how to spot scam emails and calls; and to use their IT resource to double-check. We help lots of customers when they get suspect emails and they check with us so we can advise on whether an email is legitimate or not (and 9 times out of 10 it’s not legitimate).
Social Engineering Scams Uncovered
The majority of scams use social engineering to persuade or fool people to giving up details of Banking or other information. For example, a user receives an email from their MD asking about the state of bank accounts or other financial information. Or perhaps an email regarding wanting to gift staff a bonus or gift cards.

Safety Tips
As a rule-of-thumb – Don’t trust any email, even if it’s from someone you know. Don’t reply to the email. Use another method of contact to check with the sender – Phone / Mobile, or if in the same building go and see them to check.

Suspicious Emails
If the person says they didn’t send the email then they can check with the IT support team to make sure the account has not been compromised, and to reset passwords if necessary, and make sure 2 factor-authentication is turned on.
Protect Yourself from Phone Scams
Email isn’t the only method of scamming, but phone call scams tend to be focussed more on individuals than businesses. Though it’s not unheard of for businesses to receive these types of calls. Again, caution is the watchword. If you get a call from ‘your bank’ then tell them you’ll give them a call back – and only do that on their official phone numbers (on bank cards or other documentation), don’t call back on a number they give you.
