Baby, Baby, it’s a Wide World (Web) – Domains and how to avoid problems.

Your Shop Window to the World

So, you have a nice shiny Domain? – but you are fed up with your current Web Developer. Let the arm-wrestling commence…

Websites. We all have them in Business. They are our Shop Window to the world, telling people how great we are and not to use anyone else. They allow us to sell things, online or as a service we provide to customers. But there can be a ‘dark side’ to the story when people fall out over who-looks-after-what.

Understanding Your Web Domain

To recap, a Web Domain is the ‘www.’ part of your Business, such as in our case we have target-its.co.uk as our Domain, and no doubt you know this as you are on our Website reading this. The Domain can be hosted with many and varied companies:

Understanding DNS Records

The Domain has what is called DNS – this is a set of instructions to tell the Domain where services are. For example, if your email is with Microsoft Office 365 the ‘DNS Records’ for email for your Domain will point to Microsoft. And your Website ones point to wherever the files for your website are.

Separation of Domains and Web Space

Domains are independent of Web Space, and both can be with the same provider. In a lot of cases where a Business has changed Web providers several times the Domain may still be with the original Web Developer you used (and perhaps fell out with many years ago).

Control of Your Domain

This is dangerous. If you don’t have control of your Domain, then it can cause problems when you move Web Developers. The original might decide they want to charge a fee for additional services they carry out that you don’t need with them. Or in the worst case won’t let you into the Domain control panel to make changes.

Why Trust Target IT for Your Domain Management

We at Target IT have always erred on the side that it is best for the IT Support to look after Domains. This has several benefits:

Complete IT Support
Your IT company are supporting the rest of the IT, so why not the Domain?
Quick DNS Changes
Changes to the DNS records are easier and quicker when done by the IT Support.
Sanity Check for Changes
They provide a ‘sanity check’ when Web Developers or Customers want to make changes to DNS that might affect other services, such as email.
Developer Transitions
If you fall out with a Web Developer then your IT Support will be able to work with your newly-appointed Developer and point the Domain to your nice shiny new website.
Reliable Domain Renewal
Lastly, your IT Support are unlikely to forget to renew the Domain! We’ve seen this recently with a customer who owned a .com Domain for many years. They fell out with their previous Web Developer who managed the Domain for them, and were then rather surprised when the .com Domain didn’t renew and went back into the available Domains to buy…

Reclaiming Your Domain: How We Helped a Customer Avoid a Costly Mistake

Predictably someone bought the Domain, and advertised this for several thousand pounds for purchase by anyone who wanted it. This left the Customer with little option but to buy the Domain for this inflated price as they needed it. We assisted in the purchase, and this worked out smoothly, even with the worry that the seller might want more money once they knew someone was interested.

Don’t leave your Domain management to chance. We at Target IT always recommend we manage Customer Domains, to avoid any of the above scenarios and ensure your Web-based systems continue to run smoothly.
